This beautiful, calming walk begins from just below the Kuranda market; access to steps down to the river bank from the end of Therwine Street.
Alternatively cross the overhead pedestrian bridge at Kuranda railway station and follow the signs to the Kuranda Riverboat.
The elevated climate is cooler than Cairns and on a hot day a trip to Kuranda can offer a refreshing respite from lowland temperatures.
Keep driving up the hill from Kuranda and you’ll reach Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands; great for exploring the coffee plantations.
Barron Falls | Din Din
3 km from the village of Kuranda, drive out to the Barron Falls, one of the most visited and spectacular waterfalls in Tropical North Queensland.
The ideal time to see it is when it’s in full flood - possibly in January and February.
In 2022 the rains came later and by late April the Barron Falls were in full flight.
The wet season 2022-2023 began in December. By January 2023 the Barron Falls were literally roaring with the sound of the river releasing its waters over the 125 metre drop into the Barron Gorge.
In drier periods the falls reduce to a trickle; nevertheless it’s still a beautiful walk to the falls via. an elevated skywalk through the rainforest.
Angelic blue-winged Ulysses butterflies dart in the forest, as if to welcome you to their magical kingdom.
This pathway from carpark to falls takes you to the vantage points and the Barron Falls railway station.
The Kuranda scenic train stops on every journey to allow passengers to disembark and enjoy the panorama of the falls for several minutes.
